Description: Sarracenia "Kew Gardens" pitcher plant is a medium height hybrid of S. alabamensis and flava var rubricorpora. It is the darkest pitcher plant we have ever seen, even darker than the Sarracenia purpurea, or S. 'Black Widow'. The leaves emerge maroon. By late fall, the mature leaves are nearly black.
The undulating lids are reminiscent of rubra with heavy venation throughout. Leaves are usually 18 inches tall with 2.5 inch wide hoods. Its thick stand of black leaves will stand out in any collection. It makes an excellent color and size contrast to our North Carolina native Sarracenia supermax. Pitcher Plant Care: Plant Sarracenia Kew Gardens in full sun to part shade outdoors. Use peat moss in a very large planter and keep it wet. It loses its leaves in the winter. Cold hardy to 20F in a pot and 0F in the ground.
